The OERC developed an interactive data visualization that displays the flow of graduates from Ohio’s public colleges and universities to Ohio’s workforce.
Award to Employment Industry
This visualization represents the flow of graduates from Ohio’s public colleges and universities (on the left) to Ohio’s workforce (on the right). Hover over any path in the chart and a box will appear that identifies the award area from which that group graduated, the industry of their employers, and their median earnings.
Using the dropdown menus one can select a graduating cohort year, the number of years post-graduation to view industries of employment for that cohort, and the award level of graduates.
The Data Details tab provides technical information about the data behind this visualization. Some filter selections return a “No data available” message. This is because the employment data is not yet available or because there is insufficient data for that category. Adjust the selections to choose an earlier cohort year, reduce the number of years post graduation, and/or choose a more common award such as Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.
Employment by Program
This visualization shows the employment patterns of graduates from Ohio’s public postsecondary institutions. Use the filters to select the year of graduation and the number of years since graduation. Narrow results further by selecting a specific award, institution, and/or subject. Employment for the selected graduates will show in the graph below.
The graph shows the percentage of graduates found working in Ohio along the bottom, and the median earnings per year on the left. Each bubble on the graph corresponds to one award area and one subject at one institution. The more graduates there are, the bigger the bubble. Bubbles that are farther to the right represent a greater percentage of graduates who are found working in Ohio, and those positioned higher up on the graph represent greater earnings. Hovering over a bubble on the graph displays additional details.
Some filter selections return a “Sorry, no data available with this search” message. This is because the employment data is not yet available or because there is insufficient data for that category. Adjust the selections to decrease the number of years after graduation, choose a more common award such as Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, set the Institution filter to “All”, and/or remove any Detailed Subject filter selections to only view the outcomes for the General Subject.
Earnings Over Time
This visualization shows time trends in the median earnings of graduates from Ohio’s public postsecondary institutions. Use the filters to select the year of graduation and the subject. Narrow results further by selecting a specific award area and/or a more detailed subject.
The graph displays the median earnings for each year after graduation, with each line representing the earnings of graduates within a specific award area and detailed subject area. Hover over a point on the graph to see a summary of the information at that point.
Some filter selections return a “Sorry, no data available with this search” message. This is because there is insufficient data for that category. Adjust the filter selections to remove Award or Detailed Subject filters, as the graph will show a line for any data available for the General Subject.
Data Details
Data Sources for the Higher Education Outcomes dashboard
Information on this dashboard is compiled by the Ohio Education Research Center (OERC) using data from the Ohio Longitudinal Data Archive (OLDA) as collected by:
Ohio Department of Higher Education
Individual-level postsecondary education information comes from the Ohio Department of Higher Education and includes information from public colleges, universities, and Ohio Technical Centers. Data from private institutions are not included. Each award is associated with a subject identifier (CIP code) that is generalized to the two-digit level. Visualizations may count the same individual multiple times if the individual earns two or more distinct awards.
Ohio Department of Job and Family Services
Earnings and industry information come from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Unemployment Insurance Wage (UI Wage) and Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) data. The employment records represent all employment in Ohio except self-employment and Federal or military employment. The employment industry is captured in the QCEW using the NAICS code, generalized to the two-digit level. Earnings are reported as total quarterly earnings in the UI Wage system. The quarterly earnings are annualized (multiplied by four), and CPI adjusted to the value of dollars for the most recent year in the data. Earnings and employment are measured four calendar quarters following the term of graduation, and every four quarters for which data is available, up to ten years following graduation.
State Support
The Ohio Longitudinal Data Archive is a project of the Ohio Education Research Center, and provides researchers with centralized access to administrative data. The OLDA is managed by The Ohio State University’s Center for Human Resource Research in collaboration with Ohio’s state workforce and education agencies, with those agencies providing oversight and funding.
